Marla

China,

I stumbled across your site and blog today and was moved to tears. As an African-American woman "born and bred" as they say in Houston, Tx with deep roots in rural east Texas, my body ached as I read about "restoring community access to Love". I was struck by the real depth of this statement, how we are cut off from access to the life-giving, nourishing source of Love.

I cried... it felt as though my mother, grandmother and great-grandmothers were crying through me. I felt the men of my family crying, long exploited and degraded by interlocking systems of injustice and hatred.

I was reminded that somehow, locked in flesh and bone, buried deep are the memories of our ancestors. We carry their stories, their pain... which ultimately leads to the shared ancestry that we all share. I felt the pull of the great wisdom shared by King and others that I am not free, until we are all free.

Thank you for your great work. You have inspired me deeply. I will share your work on my new blog... www.weboffortune.wordpress.com. Good luck.

Many Blessings,
Marla

August 8th, 2007!

Dear Yvonne, thank you for your inquiry!

To answer your question about another Black Madonna conference, I have to say "yes” AND “no." I’m teaching a five day class and mini-conference in January 2008, "The Black Madonna and the Womb of God" (Jan. 28th-Feb. 2nd, 2008) at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley, CA, for CARE, the Center for Art, Religion and Education, where I'm a professor in residence. It will not be the same conference though some of the same presenters have been invited and will be involved. The course can be taken for graduate level credit, it can be audited, or taken for CEU credits.

Anyone taking my January-February 2008, interim session class at the GTU, can begin working on their art or research project course requirement when I’m teaching at Chartres Cathedral, September 17th -22nd, 2007.

The January, 2008, informal mini-conference and graduate level, accredited course may birth a core group to take on a national conference. Alternatively, because of our ongoing work with The Keepers of Love project, including our work with the Alliance for Truth and Racial Reconciliation (ATRR), we may join our efforts with the upcoming national ATRR conference now being planned. More will be revealed.

Please go to my new website: www.chinagalland.com and see “Resources” for more about ATRR and then also click on “Join Us” and sign up for my very intermittent e-mail letter. You’ll be kept up to date automatically.

This fall I’m teaching at Chartres Cathedral, and co-leading a pilgrimage in France. During my January class and mini-conference, we’ll see new images from my teaching at the Cathedral outside of Paris (September 17-22, 2007), for Veriditas, the world-wide Labyrinth project (www.veriditas.org). I’ll be writing a blog from Chartres that week that will be featured on the Penguin site.

See “France” on my new website: www.chinagalland.com for details on the Chartres residential program

AND

For news of a moveable feast of Black Madonna and Magdalene sites in Central France, I’m co-leading a pilgrimage in France from October 9th to the 21st, 2007, for GATE (Global Awareness Through Experience, www.gate-travel.org). We will visit and honor a variety of Black Madonna and St. Mary Magdalene shrines in Central France. Details for this second trip are also under “France” at www.chinagalland.com.

You haven't heard from me until now as I've been traveling for weeks on a book tour for my two non-fiction books that came out this June, 2007: a new edition of Longing for Darkness, Tara and the Black Madonna (Penguin, 2007, be sure you ask for the 2007 edition with a new cover and new introduction)

and

Love Cemetery, Unburying the Secret History of Slaves (HarperOne, June 2007). Go to:
www.chinagalland.com to find out more.

On August 21st, I'm reading at the Book Passage Independent Bookstore in Corte Madera, CA. See listing on www.chinagalland.com.

There are always times set aside for the experiential during my teaching, no matter where I am. For the January 2008 class in Berkeley, for CARE at the GTU, we will also walk a labyrinth, a Chartres-style labyrinth with trained labyrinth facilitators there to help us.

As of this writing, in August 2007, please go to www.chinagalland.com for the most current information about upcoming events, readings, travels, conferences and pilgrimages.

Dear Yvonne, thank you for your inquiry!

In short: "yes," but different, smaller, a mini-conference and graduate level theology intensive between semesters.

The mini-conference and course, "The Black Madonna and the Womb of God," is the week of January 28th, 2008, four hours a day, minimum, through February 2, 2008. It can be taken for graduate level credit, audited, or you can get CEU's for it.

August 21st, I'm reading in Corte Madera, CA, at the Book Passage Independent Bookstore. (listed on www.chinagalland.com site)

I am doing a five day class and mini-conference this coming January 2008, on "The Black Madonna and the Womb of God" (Jan. 28th-Feb. 2nd,2008) at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) in Berkeley, CA, for CARE, the Center for Art, Religion and Education where I'm a professor in residence.

At the mini-conference and accredited graduate level course, we'll see new images from my teaching this September and from my co-leading a pilgrimage in October to Black Madonna and Magdalene sites in France --- over the next two months.

If you are interested, I'm teaching a 5-day residential program about the Black Madonnas for Veriditas, the world-wide Labyrinth program, on-site, in the village of Chartres, at Chartres Cathedral, outside of Paris, France. Sept. 17th-22nd.

Back again in Paris, October 9th I start meeting my fellow and sister pilgrims for an actual pilgrimage to Black Madonna and Magdalene shrines. That 12 day program I am co-leading for for GATE-travel.org. We'll
traveling from site to site in Central France.

GO to my new website www.chinagalland.com and click on "FRANCE" on the side bar. That will give you more specifics and links to the organizations I'm working with. They can also tell you if there are places left, should you be interested in joining me.

For January, 2008, GTU class, we will see new Black Madonna material, as well as material from my May 2007 pilgrimage to Saintes Maries de la Mer, the feast of St. Sarah, the Patron of the Romani people, the Gypsies, who come from all over Europe to celebrate their St. Sarah-Kali.

There are always times set aside for the experiential during my teaching, no matter where I am. For the January 2008 class in Berkeley, for CARE at the GTU, we will also walk a labyrinth, a Chartres-style labyrinth with trained labyrinth facilitators there to help us.

I am co-leading an actual pilgrimage to Black Madonna shrines, traveling from sacred site to sacred site, including some Magdalene sites as well. This Oct. 9th-Oct 21st pilgrimage is with GATE-travel.org.

Again, please to:

and click on "France" on the side bar, if you want to join us.

Dear China,

I have been thinking of you a lot. What is going on with the book? I am sorry it has been so long. I just published my novel Strands and would love for you to read it. Hope to hear from you soon.
Love,
Elise
